These are really, really common problems. I don’t go to grab those chips, and I know that they’re going to knock down my resiliency even more, so I’ll be more stressed because now I’m in that vicious cycle of stress, crap, stress, crap, stress, crap, where I can’t get out. Some people might be taking nitroglycerin, they might be taking medications for erectile dysfunction, and if they are, then this gene is dirty and nitric oxide synthase 3- NOS3 is a big, big player in health. Ari Whitten: Yeah and in my Facebook group with members of my energy blueprint program, I see it all the time. You can’t start a business from nothing, really, and expect. But it’s not that hard because you’ve been maintaining your table, and so you just come home and you clean it off. I know it sounds not like these are big changes, and they’re not, which is the cool thing, but the impact you will feel is massive. You’ve got to have a solid foundation before you build on top of it, and you hear this example all the time. With the risk ‘G’ allele of G51-898A proposed to be associated with … And then we have these tools in our tool chest. NOS3 is also known as eNOS. Histamine is this compound that is very, very common in the population, where it’s elevated. It’s going to make me feel good if I take it then. We think of genes in this very static way, and what you’re saying is genes are really dynamic and that we have all these hundreds of genes that are being expressed differently from minute to minute depending on what we’re doing and what information they’re getting. Can you take just a moment to explain folate, why it’s important, and actually what the difference is between that and folic acid? If people are just, their bodies, are just more sensitive to the effects of various kinds of chemicals? But if you go later on and you stick your key in the door, you unlock it, and you try to take the key out again – you can’t, it’s stuck. If any of those other six genes are dirty, this NOS3 gene is dirty. Dr. Ben Lynch: Yeah, so Dirty Genes, if I may is here, and I will have this little thought in here it says encrypted proof, not for sale. And then going into this cell danger response and shutting down energy production in the mitochondria. So this is just a function of something relatively simple that we can incorporate in our lives to improve our health overall. And sometimes I will walk by a bag of chips or a 4 pack of alcoholic apple cider. Basically, it’s all about how much work we give our genes, and if it’s the right work and which tools we provide them. So, a little bit of a learning curve to get back into PowerPoint. As you pointed out, Allan, I do have a huge personal reservoir of, “Yes, I know this supplement can do this. There are benefits to having a dirty NOS3 gene that we’ve also talked about in the book, it’s really important for cardiovascular disease. What made me better was changing my environment and getting rid of chemicals and eating more salad. And I equate this to general cleanup. I think that’s what I really liked about this book, was that it gave us some tools. If you can go to Ketofest, that’s even better. That’s what irritated you so much from reading that in the book. What you’re saying is something that maybe people aren’t quite catching, but I think is really important, which is there’s also something that is influencing the genes, the way that genes are working. You get bit by a mosquito and you’re super, super itchy. Sometimes it’s hard for me to see them make those choices, but at the end of the day they’re going to be not living under my roof and they’re going to make grown decisions as an adult and I’m not going to be there for them. Because folic acid is 10 steps from becoming L-Methylfolate. Associations for the risk allele (C) of this SNP include: Rheumatoid Arthritis [PMID 17009241], and,; cardiovascular mortality in high-risk patients [PMID 16979000] So if you have SIBO or struggling with gut issues, PEMT is a factor that a lot of people need to start digging into more, and a lot of doctors don’t know the connection there. She said her husband is as a building contractor, he’s actually a plumber, and he was reading Dirty Genes, which was cool. That’s what I call the ABCs of clean genes – A is Avoidance. There’s a bonus chapter on drbenlynch.com, have you seen that? So think of it this way too, you … I’m trying to think of an example here, you basically … If you do this in another presentation, to build a skyscraper, the foundation is humongous and super solid for a skyscraper, or a home or anything. Yeah, very good point, but yeah, so you just look for a prenatal that has both forms of active Folate which are L-methylfolate and Folic acid. When you want to clean your kitchen, you start with the dishes – they’re glaring there on the counter. They handle the balls really well or handle whatever sport that they’re doing, the racket, or their serves are greater, or their volleys are greater, their shooting abilities are great. It’s gone now from treating and reduce over these days. It sounds kind of weird, but it really, really helps. If you get some in your diet or you want to eat your energy bar or you go out to a restaurant, don’t freak out, it’s fine, but don’t intentionally buy something that’s with Folic acid in it and don’t intentionally buy food with flowers and so on, cut those out. No, but you have increased risk because if you are smelling those chemicals and you are not dealing with it, then you better deal with it because, as you pointed out, the resiliency goes down. It looks good. Ari Whitten: For sure. We’d love to hear from you! When you have asthma, you are struggling with low glutathione . It’s your choices that are doing that. Simply use our contact address and we’ll get back to you within 24 hours. And the Cell Danger response will shift that, so you’re not producing energy anymore as much, you’re still doing some otherwise you’re dead. It’s extremely slow. So you go to the store and you buy riboflavin and L-methylfolate, and you’re all excited because those two nutrients are going to go in your blood, and they are just going to bypass that genetic cumuli and you’re like woohoo, okay? Ari Whitten: That’s an interesting question. Dirty Genes is the same concept. Nitric oxide synthase 3 G894T gene polymorphism and response to skin hyperemia are reported. Wait a few days, as you wait a few days thinking, “Okay, I’m starting to go back to my old self again, well take it again.” So as you start feeling yourself slide back down that slope again, take it again. When you have the condition of cerebral folate deficiency, which a lot of autistic children have, then folic acid is a known contraindication when that occurs, because they know that it’s going to cause further folate deficiency in the brain. And that is a very, very quick response; it’s nerve response. Ari Whitten: No, I have to agree on that point, you did a great job of simplifying a lot of complex material. What senses that is your mitochondria and your mitochondria will produce your energy. Ari Whitten: It’s a little blurry, I don’t know if the camera can focus? It just takes your nutrients and goes along with your [inaudible] and even others. If it says folate and it has parentheses and it will say as Folic acid, or it will say as Quatrefolic or it will say calcium Folate. They’ve got it all broken down, you can buy tickets to the different things. You’re going to get gray hair faster, you’re going to get chemical sensitivity, you’re not going to have energy, you’re going to have asthma, you’re going to have extra induced to asthma, you’re going to be super sensitive to smells and perfumes. I forget what D was, and E, and all these other ones. So a lot of people have a problem or a symptom they want to swallow something for that. So you’re right, it needs a paradigm shift. You can buy a table perfectly brand-new and you can put it in an environment. Because what’s happening is the Folic acid is gumming up the receptors to their genes and they’re not removing it. I’m pretty excited. I know that I enjoyed them when I had them, but now I’ve got to make that up and clean myself up with the breathing, with the water, and finding good quality food that’s going to actually nourish me, because I didn’t really get any nourishment out of that snack.”. Now, we all know Folic acid and we think that if we take a supplement with Folic acid or eat a food that’s enriched with Folic acid, we’re doing ourselves a favor, well you’re not. And I told you this just before we started here – I had to put the book down because I got angry. The fact is, your genes are collecting input and that input comes from you and so you can determine. Why? That’s how they’re cleaning their genes – they’re targeting one tiny little area that’s pretty insignificant, and it really doesn’t make any difference. Dr. Ben Lynch: Yeah, super smart, I mean he makes me feel absolutely … Non-intentionally but I’m just listening to him and just like wow. When you first get your computer and you’re trying to set it all up, it wasn’t as simple as just plug-and-play and some of the things we have today. And it’s not just physical; there are some mood-based things in there as well, or tendencies, like if you have a tendency to be a little bit more focused or single-minded or a little bit more out there with the ADHD kind of stuff. A lot of people don’t understand this, Allan, that food provides energy and it also provides the necessary building blocks for things in our body, which our genes use to make things. I said, “Are you serious?” And he goes, “Yeah, we need a 30-day program.” I said this is a program to help people clean their genes for the rest of their life; this is not a 30-day thing. You’re not making your dopamine, norepinephrine, epinephrine, serotonin. (2005) Influence of the endothelial nitric oxide synthase gene on conventional and ambulatory blood pressure: sib-pair analysis and haplotype study. Ari Whitten: Beautiful and you briefly glossed over something there that is really important and is actually one of the reasons that I’m a fan of your book. Now if you are still staying up late, and you’re stressed out, and you’re not sleeping deeply, or you’re eating processed foods, you’re not going to get tremendous benefit. If you’re overworked, you get tired and stressed out and you don’t perform as well and you start making mistakes, same with your genes, and it’s that simple. The Nitric Oxide Synthase 3 (NOS3) gene is associated with the synthesis of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), an enzyme which facilitates the production of Nitric Oxide (NO).NO is shown to be associated with the widening of blood vessels by relaxing the smooth muscle cells within their walls, this has been shown to increase blood flow. This is something that I really have not seen other people do, which is you listed out some of these most important genes, and then you listed out pros and cons or strengths and weaknesses that are associated with each one of these. But that allows me to have more Folinic acid because MTHFR is at the very bottom of the biochemical pathway, so if somebody’s MTHFR’s working really quickly, they’re making a bunch of L-Methylfolate and the Folinic acid levels are staying lower. Those are probably the two biggest ones, and then C is Chew. Ari Whitten: Yeah, so one thing I’ve heard you talk about in the past which is one of my personal favorite subjects and something that a lot of my work is based on is the cell danger response and this idea of kind of mitochondria being overwhelmed by various kinds of stressors or toxins. NOS3 represents an interest-ing candidate gene in relation to EH. I’ll send you a conference call. I’m going to enjoy it.” And if you want to stay up late and watch a movie, just know how you’re going to feel tomorrow and don’t blame others for your bad day. The biggest reason is because when you support these seven, they help clean up all the other genes in your body. It’s I’m recollecting this, I’m pretty sure I’m correct. And will get in there and will kill the virus or the bacteria or the whatever’s going on, and then after that insult is gone, the cell danger response will quiet and everything will start going back to repair mode again. However, individual transcript sequences of the same gene can differ through naturally occurring variations (e.g. Dr. Ben Lynch: I like where you’re going with this, and some of what you said is right on and the example of Curcumin, Curcumin will slow the CRMT gene down. In fact, the last one I did was on how to put together a fraud investigation. Allan (44:22): I hope you enjoyed that interview with Dr. Lynch. And then if there’s a reason, we can look at these other supplements as just that, a supplement. To get specific, maybe we can dive into some of these specific gene SNPs and talk about some of the strengths and weaknesses associated with I guess we’ll start with MTHFR. the podcast I did with Andrea Duffy from Sunlighten. He happens to be in San Diego where I live and so I got to go to his lab a few months ago and hang out with him for a few hours. The show notes might not be there when you’re first listening to this, but they’ll be out there soon, I promise. Supplements are simply a way to Spot Clean your Fast COMT. We don’t have malaria here really in our environments, right, so when you live in certain areas, there is still malaria in certain areas so that is an issue. Super Seven sounds better. Just know that now your threshold has just gone from here to here, and make up for it the next couple days or the next week. My kids, I’ll let them eat stuff that they shouldn’t eat. Then see what to do about it here. And then it’s like, “Heck no, I don’t want it.”, Allan (37:07): That’s a cost-benefit. Thanks, Ari. I almost dedicated the book to… It was going to say something along the lines, “This book is dedicated to those who read and actually implement what they read.” Because you can read all you want, but if you don’t actually implement, no book is going to serve you and you’re going to be complaining that the book didn’t help you out. A lot of people don’t chew their food, and our stomach doesn’t have teeth. B is Breathe. I think it’s because we all like these very simple rules. You wrote, and I’m going to just quote you here quickly. My MTHFR gene is working at 30% capacity. If someone wanted to get in touch with you, learn more about what you’re doing, more about the book and get to that Facebook group that you talked about, where would you like for me to send them? Now, in your book, you have the 4-week Clean Gene Protocol. From that, there’s hormones, neurotransmitters, vitamins and stuff floating around. I’m forgetting my analogy, how it worked. So they need to know now how they’re going to feel if they eat garbage, and they’re already experiencing it. Yeah, exactly and another one is this is something I researched a bit, but I couldn’t really find a true connection. Then you tackle the counters. Actually they’re not their genes. It’s only $17. So I’m going to be getting the real education, I’ve got all the science there and all the citations and I have the clinical evidence to back it up too. And one of the concepts that came up was how when someone’s trying to teach you how to do an online business, most of the people that were successful at that are actually just selling to other people that want to run online businesses. I used to do the opposite. You’re trying to make a deck of cards to go up, the foundation has to be stable. It does. Allan (32:36): I think there are two things that really resonated with me with what you just talked about, the first being really having this self-awareness, slowing down just a little bit to say, “What makes me feel which way?” You talked about kind of looking into the future to get a view of where you’re going to be or how that was going to affect you. This is a big, another big paradigm shift for a lot of people because again you hear so many people saying, “Oh, I have let’s say dirty MTHFR gene, therefore that’s bad and I have increased susceptibility or propensity for this symptom and that symptom and this disease and that disease, and this is a bad gene and I’m just I have bad luck.”. So it literally is “above the genetics”, and that doesn’t really help you out that much, but what you need to know is genes are buried inside your nucleus, which is buried inside your cell, and your cell contains all this stuff inside a cell membrane. Dr. Ben Lynch: I would say nine times out of 10 it will be Synthetic Folic acid if it just says Folate. If you’re exercising and you have really bad post workout soreness, glutathione levels are probably low and you probably need to support those. If you get scared, then your body will sense that fear through your brain and that will trigger a flood of neurotransmitters and other chemicals. NOS3 affects your production of nitric oxide, which is a major factor in heart health, affecting such processes as blood flow and blood vessel formation. Another good thing is folic acid is typically found in processed foods, so if you limit your processed food intake, you’re also reducing your folic acid intake. Ari Whitten: It’s a team with the one star-player and everybody else who sucks and doesn’t play as a team, right? You have a good night sleep, your resiliency is better, right? You can go to 40PlusFitnessPodcast.com/272 and listen to the longevity plan discussion we had. That was also brought up by Dr. John and Jane Day in their book The Longevity Plan. The association between NOS3 and EH has been widely studied, and the disruption of the gene leads to hypertension in mice [11]. They are a part of our individual build and control everything, from our eye and hair color, to how we metabolize different foods, to how well we detoxify chemicals, to how susceptible to cancer we are. It’s great for business, it’s great for convenience, but you are literally eating dust without nutritional value. This is a bummer. Log in to subscribe to Addgene Alerts. When you’re fighting an infection, the cleanup crew is glutathione to clean up all the mess. And it’s been great that I’ve done that. Then we've got NOS3, sometimes called NOS3. And if you’re not secreting stomach acid, you’re not breaking the food down. Before, life was fun and enjoyable, but it didn’t really mean anything, right? This week, I am talking to Dr. Ben Lynch ND, who is a pioneer in the field of epigenetics and author of the book “Dirty Genes.” He will share his strategies on fixing “dirty genes” the right way, and why many people are trying to fix their “dirty genes” the wrong way and actually making their health problems worse in the process. The gene encoding eNOS, NOS3, has been mapped to human chromosome 7q36 and spans approximately 23 kilobases of the genome [10]. But if you owned a personal computer back in the 1980s, they had this series of dip switches in the back. If you take it a little bit, in the beginning, you feel nothing, maybe you need some more. So I really enjoyed the book and I really enjoyed that conversation, and I hope you did too. You have to find genes that are one, well-researched; two, I had to have enough clinical experience with them; three, you have to be able to support them through basic lifestyle habits and supplementation and environmental changes; and four, they had to make a huge impact in day-to-day life. Rob Barrett & Dr. Lou Francescutti, Improve your self-esteem with Rosie Mercado, Dr. Jason Fung on the mystery behind cancer, How to use peptides safely with Dr. And when they have that extra energy, I want to help them focus it and make it something special. Inhibition of IC53 in human umbilical vein ECs induces upregulation of eNOS activity. This hasn’t been called for some time. Ari Whitten: Yeah, well, I have to say I’m excited for you to write that book. You know Vitamin C, you know Vitamin E, you might know Resveratrol and these other things, but glutathione is really the big kahuna, that’s what you want and have plenty of. So folic acid is the key, and the doorknob is the receptor or the folate-binding protein. Ari Whitten: Yeah, absolutely. If you get some Folic acid, it’s okay, don’t worry about it. Then if you’re not doing that as well or you need more nutritional support, then you find a prenatal that has both L-methylfolate to supporting methylation and Folinic acid to support your blood cells and your platelets, and so on. But very, very few people are actively looking for why folic acid is bad. I bring you Dr. Ben Lynch. Variations in this gene are associated with susceptibility to coronary spasm. Well, first you have to understand folate metabolism and that gets complicated but in short, there are two really main forms of folate. Humans, on the other hand – very, very slow. “Epi” means “above”, and genetics is genetics. Dr. Ben Lynch: For sure, yeah, I’m glad you pulled that out too because you’re right, I do … We just briefly touched on it here, and then in the book, we expand on it more. So we were talking about that, and one of the theories I have is that people who are in business know that you have to spend money to make money. Thank you again for sharing your brilliance and wisdom with my audience, really such a pleasure to connect with you and this was a lot of fun. Water can kill you, air can kill you, right? So you’ve got to start with healthy food and you also have to start with basically understanding that breathing is an automatic thing, the autonomic nervous system, but if you are not breathing properly, then your genes are very, very dirty. I’ve got three boys, and right now they’re 15, 13 and 10. There’s another gene called DAO, and this one lives primarily in your digestive system, and its job is to break down histamine. I think for me it validates my thought process on this whole thing, which is, don’t treat the SNP, get the fundamentals in line so I love that. Folic acid is one of those things that was literally invented by humans, because we decided, geniusly, to have basically bread flour, stripped of all nutrients, so it’ll live on the shelf longer. What’s the difference between those two? There is a lot of interplay and a lot of complexity to this, but you did a really good job in the book, at least in my opinion, of making this attainable, making this something we can wrap our heads around. So I do hope that you’re thinking about this, that you’re considering this. Dr. Ben Lynch: That’s right, and you know it’s because I really wanted to think pros and cons to each one, and I had to rack my brain on some of these. Once that happens, an action will take place. It’s like, “Wow, that chewing thing – I definitely need to work on that.” Put the book down. Bonnardeaux et al. 44:25 Mouth breathing and cardiovascular disease. Allan (12:42): It has to be an odd number. So $5 for two pounds to buy Folic acid to use in a bunch of supplement tests, that’s super cheap. Dr. Lynch (37:40): Yeah. It’s literally gumming up your genetics and your whole body. However, some people have genes – the MTHFR gene, for example –  which are not functioning optimally and can cause different health issues. You could turn them on and turn them off. So you just need to maybe stick a piece of paper on it to keep it from moving around. Just yesterday I walked into the house and I was like, “God, I’m tired.” And I opened the fridge looking for something to give me a perk up. So… reduce your stress, reduce your sleeping, and you are like, “Yada, yada, yada, okay, I get it.” But there are genes which predispose you to stress, and there are genes that predispose you to sleeping poorly and falling asleep with difficulty or staying asleep. That’s it. And then I can work faster or slower, and there’s pros and cons to that. Nice, new Play-Doh. Find diseases associated with this biological target and compounds tested against it in bioassay experiments. So if you tune into your symptoms, you’re going to learn what they mean from reading this book and you’ll be able to take action but it’s ultimately your decision. I talked with him all the time and he’s a phenomenal individual and author of the paper. NOS3 & Genetics. You’ve got to make some adjustments. Epigenetics is simply how our genes are responding to the environment. If you have a car key or a house key, and you insert the key into your door, you unlock it and you go inside. So, Dr. Ben Lynch is a Naturopathic doctor and he’s really a pioneer in the field of something called Epigenetics, which is how our environment and our lifestyle controls the expression of our genes. It’s like, “Dude, really?” You’re the driver of your machinery, and we could do the car example, we could do the airplane, we could do the computer, we could do any type of machinery, it doesn’t matter. When NOS3 is born dirty: Strengths: decreased blood vessel formation (angiogenesis) during cancer, which reduces the growth of cancer Dr. Ben Lynch: Yeah, thanks for bringing that up. But there are benefits to having these born dirty genes. You’re supposed to use a more active form of folate, called folinic acid or methylfolate, and everything is merry, and it’s pretty simple and pretty cheap. It’s like the soak and scrub 4-week protocol for free for you. If I eat chips and garbage, which I do at times, I will compensate the next day by doing something different to make it up. It’s only $19 now, or $17 on Amazon, which is very, very affordable for what you get. 39:40 Is there a particular order for cleaning genes? You need to have that folate dock and get off, dock and get off. Let it sit there for two weeks, three weeks, and focus on your breathing. We have thousands and thousands of views on each one, and they’re a lot of fun. If I retired I’ll be a soccer coach, I love it. (1996) studied a marker closer to the 5-prime end of the NOS3 gene, the 27-bp repeat in intron 4, in relation to coronary artery disease. Get everything functioning well and really pointing out the flaws in that reductionist approach. I’m here today with Dr. Ben Lynch, with a conversation that I’m very, very excited to have. I move past the impulse and think what it’s actually going to do to me. It was just crazy, some of the stuff that’s out there on gene variance is really it’s crazy and I think it’s getting people into a lot of trouble, so I really appreciate you bringing sanity to this. It’s like, if you have honey on your fingers and you’re trying to type on your keyboard, or you’ve ever made dough and you need to add more flour on the counter, otherwise it’s sticking. Dr. Ben Lynch: Well done, well done. I didn’t pick snips, I didn’t pick mutations, I didn’t pick variations. Dr. Ben Lynch: Billions, billions, and that it needs to change, and the paradigm is shifting and I will say that I spent a pretty amount of money to do it, but I bought folicacid.com. I picked genes, period. That’s it, it’s a simple concept that we can keep our cleans oiled and well machined. Vitamin B2 : Riboflavin phosphate: Vitamin B2 is one of three co-factors required by NOS3 to function correctly 8. For example, arsenic is pervasive in our environment, it’s everywhere, and it’s in our water, it’s in our food, it’s in the soils, and we’re consuming it on a daily basis, unfortunately. I’m curious if this ties into the GST/GPX sort of what’s going on there if maybe the person’s cells don’t produce glutathione as effectively, maybe their mitochondria are more susceptible to being overwhelmed by the stressor of let’s say toxin. My definition of wellness is going to include of course health, fitness, which is where most people stop, but I want you to add happiness to that definition, because when you have all three of those, you really have all three legs of the stool that make you feel and be well. 01:02 Supplements that support NOS3 ... Is your NOS3 gene dirty?! Wow, now your kitchen’s looking really good. I’ve talked to a few people lately and it’s kind of interesting. Very, very slow. The gene encoding eNOS, NOS3, has been mapped to human chromosome 7q36 and spans approximately 23 kilobases of the genome [10]. Dr. Lynch (25:41): Yeah, for sure. You can go to Dr. Lynch and watch my Facebook Lives that I do once a week, I’ve got a lot of videos there. So if there’s an infection, you want pro-oxidation because they’ll go and it will stimulate the immune system and the pro-oxidants will destroy the cell membrane of the infected cells. You start feeling better, and maybe you continue taking it. Dr. Lynch (41:29): Yeah, but it’s great that it’s so available. I let them know how that’s happening, why it’s happening, how to clean it up, why they gravitated towards it. But let me just, yeah, so this for example. And Dirty Genes is a manual for you. Ben Lynch:      Yeah, you see the parentheses with trimethylglycine? So we have tons of video on Dr Ben Lynch Facebook page that are freely available, and a lot of great questions, a lot of comments. First of all, you could be lucky and that’s awesome, that’s great if you’re lucky. But we also have neuro transmitters in our brain fire because of that, where we get stressed out and we get a flood of norepinephrine probably. I drank a glass of water – bam! Let me back up and share something that Bruce Lipton said. Allan (21:59): Like I said, that’s what really frustrated me, was, they’re selling you a fortified breakfast cereal. But water is needed in order to make our energy work. It’ll direct a bunch of blood to your muscles and so on but your detection of a fear or your thought of fear just stimulates a bunch of genes to turn on and say, “Okay guys, let’s get to work, and ladies, and let’s get this person out of here.”.
